On 9 December 2021, the Vice Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, David Zalkaliani, met with the co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the monitoring of Georgia, Titus Corlatean and Claude Kern.
The sides took stock of the relations between Georgia and the Council of Europe and stressed the importance of cooperation within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
David Zalkaliani condemned the Russian Federation’s aggressive and illegal activities against Georgia and the region, including the military buildup near the Ukrainian border and the intensive military activities threatening the security of Ukraine, the Black Sea region and Europe as a whole.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs briefed the co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the monitoring of Georgia on the situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia, as well as on the 55th round of the Geneva International Discussions held on 7 and 8 December.
Discussions also focused on the ongoing reforms in Georgia. At the end of the conversation, the co-rapporteurs thanked the Minister for the meeting and for providing information.
The co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the monitoring of Georgia are visiting Georgia from 8 to 10 December. The purpose of the visit is to monitor the ongoing political processes in Georgia, as well as the progress in fulfilling democratic reforms and the commitments Georgia assumed on its accession to the Council of Europe.
Within the framework of the visit, the Co-Rapporteurs will meet with the Prime Minister of Georgia, representatives of the executive and legislative branches of the Government, members of Georgia’s Permanentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Ombudsman’s Office and representatives of civil society.
