Official Reception in New Delhi Marks Georgia’s Independence Day
On May 26, 2025, an official reception was held in New Delhi, the capital of India, to commemorate Georgia’s Independence Day.
In his address, the Ambassador of Georgia Vakhtang Jaoshvili highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between Georgia and India, underscoring the ongoing partnership and the rapidly growing cooperation in the fields of education and tourism. He noted that more than 21,000 Indian students are currently studying in Georgia and that over 124,000 Indian tourists visited the country last year.
Ambassador Vakhtang Jaoshvili also emphasized the significance of recent high-level visits, including those by the Georgian Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Education, as well as a parliamentary delegation. He further spoke about his official visits to the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, aimed at strengthening Georgia’s engagement with South Asian nations.
Representing the Government of India, the Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Hon’ble Tanmaya Lal, attended the reception as the Guest of Honour. In his remarks, Mr. Lal reflected on the longstanding historical ties between India and Georgia, expressed appreciation for the growing interest of Indian citizens in Georgia, and highlighted the potential for further bilateral cooperation.
250 guests attended the reception, including ambassadors and diplomats accredited in New Delhi, officials from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and other government bodies, members of the Georgian diaspora, journalists, business leaders, cultural figures, and Honorary Consuls of Georgia.
As part of the celebrations, on May 25, 2025, the historic Qutb Minar - a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Delhi - was illuminated in the colors of the Georgian flag to mark Georgia’s National Day.
